Call For Programming Committee

By October 16, 2018 No Comments

Our 12th annual festival is coming up May 30 – June 2, 2019. We’re looking for people to help us build and shape our programme. Do you have an ear for new music? Do you like what OBEY has done so far? Do you have suggestions of how we might improve our programming? We’d love to hear from you!

For many years, we’ve been mindful of bringing people together in ways that challenge the music industry standards in Nova Scotia. While considering and supporting the local and regional communities that surround our organization, we’ve also purposefully encouraged them to explore new corners and accept new ideas. This is a vital tension that keeps OBEY thriving.

This year, we’re inviting YOU to take part in our programming process. Details on process and application guidelines after the jump!

The programming committee will meet once a month November through January, then twice in February. Each meeting will run two hours in length. In January, independent listening hours will be required of each member to assess artist submissions. We estimate that meetings and listening hours combined will total roughly 18 hours.

The responsibilities of the committee are to act as advisor on programming elements including: format, community connections and assessment of artist submissions. The committee will consist of three members of the public and one OBEY board member. The committee will meet in consultation with OBEY’s creative director.

We are looking for a wide range of perspectives and experiences, individuals who are passionate about the vision of OBEY and enthusiastic to bring their ideas and voice to the table. We’re open to anyone partaking in this committee though priority will be given to art and music creators/organizers/lovers, specifically those living currently in K’jipuktuk | Halifax. Applicants are welcomed to self-identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ2SIA+, disabled, femme or a part of any other community that is important to their identity.

As compensation for their time, knowledge and energy, committee members will receive OBEY Convention Premium Memberships, granting access to a year’s worth of programming and more!

Submitting to this year’s festival as an artist means that you’re ineligible for participation in the programming committee. (submissions coming soon!)

To apply, send a brief note outlining your interest, relevant experience and intentions with regards to your participation to our Board Liaison, Sara Russell (ssrrssll@gmail.com).

Deadline for expressions of interest is Thursday, November 1st at midnight. Applications will be assessed by the OBEY board in consultation with its creative and executive directors.

Looking Forward,
